About GSV Hoogbegaafd

GSV Hoogbegaafd offers a stimulating learning environment for (highly) gifted children who want more, dare more, and are capable of more. In small groups, they are given the space to deepen their interests, develop their talents broadly, and take ownership of their learning process. The education challenges pupils, stimulates creative and critical thinking, and takes into account the unique needs of each child. In a safe and respectful environment, pupils build not only knowledge, but also confidence and resilience. This school is specifically intended for highly gifted pupils who have often been unable to find sufficient challenge elsewhere. For children from Year 3 onwards, GSV Hoogbegaafd provides an environment that truly stimulates and motivates them to bring out the best in themselves. Here, their unique talents are recognized and further developed, enabling them to grow with enthusiasm and self-confidence. Our pupils also learn to plan, persevere, reflect, and deal with mistakes. Children who previously felt bored or did not thrive in mainstream education find a place here where they feel seen and intellectually challenged.

FAQ

For which children is the gifted department intended?

GSV Hoogbegaafd is specifically meant for pupils who have been officially identified as highly gifted. This means they must have undergone an intelligence assessment conducted by a recognized specialist, demonstrating an IQ of at least 130. The assessment may not be older than two years and must have been conducted using recognized testing instruments. In addition, the school considers the pupil’s social-emotional well-being and group dynamics. In some cases, a trial period may be arranged to determine whether the pupil is a good fit for our department. This ensures tailored support and that every child is placed in a suitable, stimulating environment.

Is GSV Hoogbegaafd a private school?

GSV Hoogbegaafd is not a private school in the traditional sense. The school is partly funded by the government and follows the Dutch education system. The difference from many other schools is that parents become members of the GSV Parents’ Association and pay a membership contribution. This contribution makes the small class sizes, individual attention and care, as well as the broad and enriching curriculum possible. Without this parental contribution, this full-time gifted department would not be able to maintain its outstanding quality.

Where is GSV Hoogbegaafd located, and how can I reach it?

By car: The gifted department of GSV is located at Hora Siccamasingel 206, 9721 EA Groningen. From the city center, the school can be reached by car in approximately 10 minutes. Parking is available in the street, but paid parking applies.

By bicycle: The location is easily accessible via local cycling paths. Pupils are asked to place their bicycles in the designated storage areas.

Public transport: Bus line 5 stops nearby at the “Hora Siccamasingel” stop, within walking distance of the school.

Is there a school uniform?

There is no mandatory school uniform. Older pupils (Years 3–6) need gym shoes, shorts, and a T-shirt for physical education classes. Younger children are encouraged to wear clothing that allows them to move and play freely. All gym items must be clearly labeled with the child’s name.

Does GSV provide lunch?

Pupils bring their own lunch from home. Preferably choose meals that are easy to eat and do not require reheating. All pupils stay at school for lunch under staff supervision. Please note: on Wednesdays, the school day ends at 12:30 pm and there is no lunch break.

What is the policy on mobile phones?

Mobile phones and smartwatches must be handed in to the teacher at the start of the day. Use of these devices is not permitted during school hours. The school is not responsible for loss or damage.
