KiVa
To promote a positive school climate, GSV works with the KiVa program. This program is based on scientific research and was developed in Finland.
KiVa is an important part of our approach to pedagogy and social-emotional learning. Through engaging lessons and activities, pupils learn about empathy, kindness, respect, and effective communication. The program helps children develop a strong sense of community and encourages them to look out for one another. Within the classes, there is a strong focus on the 7 KiVa rules, which apply throughout the school environment.
The 7 KiVa rules
1. We behave kindly and treat each other with respect.
2. Together we create a pleasant group.
3. We talk to each other and use ‘I’ language.
4. We want bullying to stop!
5. We treat each other well.
6. We help each other.
7. We stand up for one another.
Our care structure
At Groningse Schoolvereniging, we look beyond grades and reports. We see every pupil as an individual with unique talents, learning styles, and needs. That’s why we provide a support pathway that is both mindful and flexible, so every pupil has the space to grow. See the SCHOLONDERSTEUNINGSPROFIEL for a detailed description of our care structure.
The foundation of quality
Every pupil at GSV receives high-quality education within the regular curriculum. We work with a clear weekly schedule, alternating between basic instruction, focused guidance, and independent work. This helps pupils learn to take responsibility for their own learning — with the teacher inspiring as a coach.
A temporary boost
Sometimes a pupil needs a little extra support. Together with our Quality Coordinator (KC’er) or Remedial Teacher (RT’er), we create a short, targeted plan to help them.
Expert support
When additional support is not enough, we often involve specialists. Parents, teachers, and experts such as educational psychologists work closely together to determine what is needed.
Learning plan
Some pupils require longer-term support to grow at their own pace. For them, we design a personalised learning plan, with individual goals and a dedicated learning pathway (EL) or developmental perspective plan (OPP). This plan is regularly evaluated, both internally and together with parents and the pupil.
The right place
Sometimes a pupil may thrive better in a learning environment outside GSV. In consultation with parents and specialists, we explore options within special (primary) education. We manage the transition with care and respect, always in collaboration with the Samenwerkingsverband and the parents.
Remedial teachers and quality coordinators
For pupils requiring extra support, remedial teaching is provided at set times, both inside and outside the class. Each department has remedial teachers who provide additional guidance to small groups or individual pupils.
GSV systematically invests in extra hours of support through remedial teachers and quality coordinators across all departments. Teachers and internal supervisors meet four times a year to make the best possible decisions about the appropriate support for each pupil. Keeping lower-grade and international classes small is a deliberate choice, laying a solid foundation for learning from group 4 onward.
